Keyword search

The features of J-GLOBAL searches

J-GLOBAL first automatically determines the type of term that the user enters as a keyword. (Example: JST → Institution)
If you check another name that you want to add to the search and click the Search Again button, you can increase the number of hits with an OR operation.

English uppercase and lowercase letters

No distinction is made between English uppercase and lowercase letters. Even if the search term is entered in uppercase, it’s recognized as lowercase.
Example: The search results for ‘science technology’, ‘Science Technology’, and ‘ScIEncE TeCHnoLogy’ are the same.

AND search (logical product; fulfills conditions A and B)

Separate the keywords with spaces for AND searches. No distinction is made between fullwidth and halfwidth spaces.
Note that if you enter “AND”, the system searches for keywords that include “AND”.
Example: PET bottle recycling

OR search (logical sum; fulfills conditions A or B)

Separate the keywords with “OR” for OR searches. No distinction is made between fullwidth and halfwidth characters, and upper and lower case.
Example: recycling OR reuse

Phrase search

To obtain a search result that completely matches all of the specified keywords, use a phrase search. Enclose the search phrase in double quotation marks “ ”.
Example: “Lactobacillus bulgaricus”

Searches combining AND and OR searches

With searches combining AND and OR searches, AND is given priority.
For example, if you enter ‘PET bottle recycling OR reuse’, results for ‘(PET bottle AND recycling) OR reuse’ are sought.
To prioritize an OR search, use brackets ( ). No distinction is made between fullwidth and halfwidth brackets.
Example: PET bottle (recycling OR reuse)
* If you enter the string above, you search for ‘PET bottle AND (recycling OR reuse)’.
NOT searches which exclude keywords aren’t possible (logical difference; Fulfills condition A, does not fulfill condition B).

Exclusion of general keywords

General keywords like “university” and “evaluation” generate a large amount of hits, slowing down searches significantly, so you can discontinue a search if the frequency of appearance exceeds a certain number. In that case, “The search was discontinued due to excessive hits” is displayed under the search window.

Convenient search options

J-GLOBAL automatically determines the part of speech of the keyword entered by the user using a proprietary method.
Example: JST → Institution etc.
However, it’s possible to clarify whether a word is a proper noun or otherwise as follows, in case it’s unclear.

  • To specify a personal name: Researcher: Keyword
  • To specify an institution name: Organization: Keyword
  • To specify a term: Technical Term: Keyword

J-GLOBAL searches in the appropriate place based on the part of speech.

* JGON (aggregate ID): It is an aggregate ID number generated by the identification system integrated into J-GLOBAL. The same ID number is assigned to an individual believed to be the same author and inventor (and their affiliation) across Article, Patent and Research Project. However, since this number is assigned to individuals that are judged with high probability to be the same individual based on co-authorship and other information, the same author is not always assigned the same ID. JGPN stands for J-GLOBAL Person Number in Comprehensive Identification System, while JGON stands for J-GLOBAL Organization Number in Comprehensive Identification System.

Structure search

Structural drawings use Java Script based JSME.
How to use the JSME editor

Displays the smiles of the drawn structural drawing.
Clears the drawing area.
(or the current molecule, if structure contains several parts)
Delete mode. (click on atom or bond to delete it)
Functional group delete mode.
this option and then click bond connecting the group with the main skeleton
Switches the charged state.
Returns to the previous state.
Redoes the previous action.
Draws a spiro ring.
Draws the bond or ring shown on the icon.
Draws the element shown on the icon.
Used for drawing an element for which there’s no icon.
Opens the functional group menu.

Searching by molecular formula
Use halfwidth alphanumeric characters. Fullwidth characters can’t be used.
Example: C6H12

Searching by uploading structural files
You can search by specifying a Molfile with the Browse button.
You can search for complete match by checking Complete Match under the structural drawing.
You can’t use V3000 Molfiles.

Refine search

J-GLOBAL has a refine search function for further refining displayed search results by adding the publishing institution, an address and so on.
Click additional conditions and the results are refreshed reflecting the new conditions.
