The lie is a major motif in Mark Twain's novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. It is argued here that Twain presents lying as a morally imperative act the protagonist, Hank Morgan, must commit in order to protect himself from harm. It is further argued that Twain asserts a distinction between justifable and unjustifiable falsehood in his nonfiction writings which correlates with the values expressed by Hank Morgan. The Morally Imperative Lie in Twain's Connecticut Yankee. The Midwest Quarterly. 2012
