三重県のスギおよびヒノキで構成される26の混合植林地において,ニホンジカ(Cervus nippon)による樹皮食害率を調べ,ニホンジカの樹木種の嗜好性を明らかにした。その結果,損害が軽微な植林地では樹木種で食害率に有意差はなかったが,どちらかの樹木種において食害率が5%以上の植林地では,ヒノキの方がスギよりも樹皮が剥がされる率が高かった。
