- 中世日本文学、とりわけ軍記物語及び説話・物語文学の研究。中心となるのは『平家物語』の研究であり、特に古態を多くとどめる読み本系諸本の本文研究・注釈的研究によって、『平家物語』の古い姿を明らかにしてゆくことを、当面の具体的な課題としている。同時に、『平家物語』の各部分を説話単位でとらえることを通じて、説話・物語類との文学史的連関を明らかにすることも重要な課題である。さらに、日本文学ないし日本の文献において、戦争がいかに記述されているかを考えるという視点から、軍記物語の発生・展開・終息の全体像を考えることを目標としている。
