【要約】【目的】表示の視角依存性が小さい液晶装置を提供する。【構成】 TFTあるいはMIM方式の液晶装置において、各画素を液晶配向が異なる2つの領域に分割する。各々の液晶配向は小さなプレティルト角を有するねじれのないホモジニアス配向であり、2つの領域では配向方向が180度異なる。液晶はカイラル材を含まないネマティック液晶に、黒色に調合した2色性色素を添加して用いる。偏光板は、その吸収軸が液晶配向方向と直交するように1枚だけ配置する。

Claim (excerpt)：

対向する内面に電極を備えた一対の基板と、該基板間に挟持された液晶と、少なくとも1枚の偏光板とからなる液晶装置において、前記液晶が配向方向の異なる複数の領域に分割され、かつ液晶中に二色性色素を含有することを特徴とする液晶装置。
