Development of an X-ray fluorescence spectrometer to be onboard on 'SELENE', a lunar explorer, is being made. The equipment conducts mapping exploration on most of the areas, excluding the polar areas, of the lunar surface in a high space resolution of 20 km for the principal elements, Mg, Al and Si, and also in a high resolution for the others including Ca, Ti and Fe. It is successor equipment to the X-ray fluorescence spectrometer for 'HAYABUSA', and the basic principle is the same, but the total effective area of the lens is enlarged to 100 cm2. And, it implements also direct monitoring of the solar X-ray by PIN-type photodiode. The design confirmation meeting was held in 2002, and manufacture and test of FM are being made.
