Molecular level study on pearl formation mechanisms: Gene analysis in mantle epithelial tissues of pearl oysters, especially Cloning of cDNA for proteins involved in pearl formation. 1) Protein structures were analyzed for making cDNA library and synthesizing probes. 2) Biochemical analysis of structures and functions of proteins in pilgrim shells and analysis of genes coding the proteins. mRNA was extracted from pilgrim epithelial tissue. 3) Study on formation mechanisms of statoliths in fish. Electrophoresis and amino acid sequence analysis were performed for organic substrate proteins in statoliths. 4) Functional analysis of organic substrates by experiments in which calcium carbonate crystals are induced in an artificial condition. Basic data were accumulated for establishment of experimental systems.
