Research overview:
Peptides are well known to play important roles in many physiological processes as hormones, circulatory factors, neuro-transmitters modulators. The trial to construct the database for peptides has not been undertaken, as they are susceptible to proteolytic degradation and their tissue contents are low. To overcome these problems, we have improved the extraction and purification method, and have started "Peptidome Project" to establish the fact-database for endogenous peptides. This project is aimed to comprehensively analyze peptides in the specific tissue and cells by multi-dimensional HPLC and to register them based on their physiochemical properties with information of amino acid and DNA sequences, biological activity, receptors, natural abundance, and so on. This database can be searched by many indices physicochemical properties, biological activity, receptors, processing profiles and tissue contents of peptides, in addition to their names and sequences. Peptidome database is expected to be widely used as the intellectual infrastructure for medical, pharmaceutical and biological research. (k2001.10)
