Research overview:
Adrenal glands of fetuses in nude mice and nude rats were observed histologically to examine if thymus is involved in functional development of adrenal gland in fetus. No difference was found in fetus body weight of homologous and heterologous nude mice and nude rats. However, the number of cells per unit area of adrenal gland was more in heterologous animals than homologous ones, indicating that adrenal gland cortex cells in homologous animals were smaller. From these results, it was presumed that thymus might be involved in normal development of adrenal gland in the fetal stage.
