Urgent development of rice species with excellent growth sowed directly

Research overview:
Direct sowing and cultivation of paddy rice is an essential technology for save cost extensively and saving labor in future. Currently, they are partly in some farmers to serve for scale expansion and saving labor in spring season, but less popular in general cultivation. One of the factors might be the lack f appropriate species for direct sowing. In Hokkaido, such species for direct sowing as はやまさり(*) (in 1988, Hokkaido Prefectural Kamikawa Agricultural Experiment Station), きたいぶき(*) (in 1993, Hokkaido Prefectural Kamikawa Agricultural Experiment Station), have been raised, but now rarely planted, because of less favorable taste than きらら(*) 397. As species for direct sowing, "Yukimaru" applicable for transfer planting, is now used, with its taste paralleling with きらら(*) 397, requiring species of the good taste as a level of ほしのゆめ(*). Currently, among the recommended species, such ones as "Kamiiku 440", "Kamiiku 442" and "Kamiiku 444" etc paralleling with ほしのゆめ(*) level in the good taste series, have been raised. In order to stabilize the direct cultivation, improvement for growth at low temperature is required in future. To pursue the objective application, it is required that such gene resources pertinent for low growth (proof against the cold in initial period) as foreign rice should be imported into Hokkaido species as early as possible. Green Bio Institute has such bio-technologies as creation of useful conversion, culturing bud, gene manipulation, as well as a collection of crossing mother plants with excellent growth in low temperature. Through applying bio-technologies and mother plants at Green Bio Institute, constitution of cooperative research combining with such technologies as ones for yield, quality and taste evaluation of Hokkaido Prefectural Kamikawa Agricultural Experiment Station is expected to develop early the species with excellent growth in low temperature. The species with excellent growth paralleling with 緑育(*) PL 1 along with favorable taste at the same level of ほしのゆめ(*) should be developed as early as possible.
