Basic study of effect of visual information on evacuation behaviour

It is very important in safe evacuation to select appropriate path based on such visual information as guidance light and behavior of other evacuees when evacuating at fire. It is difficult in safety however to experimentally study effectiveness of visual information under environmental conditions close to circumstances of actual fire. This study purposes to obtain basic knowledge necessary for quantifying influence of human evacuation behavioral characteristic, visual information in particular, on selection of path or psychological oppressive sensation of evacuees in a spce of virtual reality with a computer. Developed in concrete is a technology that can give flowing factors like smoke, crowd or the like (dynamic factors), as computer graphic image (CG), to existing visual-sense simulating apparatus that can synthesize a model developed for assessment of street spatial scene with CG, and can simulate behavior of evacuation at the fire as virtual experience. And by using this apparatus to conduct simulation experiment, influence of the dynamic factors on the behavior at evacuation is revealed through comparison between experimental result of evacuating behavior prescribed only with spatial figure of buildings (fixed factor) and the case with visual information having motion like smoke.
