Research and development on rocket engine technology

Research overview:
Rocket Propulsion Center is promoting project-style research/development for rocket engine technology as follows: (1) Research on reusable rocket engines: In order to establish the key-technologies of reusable rocket engines characterized by long life, light weight, and high performance for reusable space launch vehicles, we are promoting research on systems of turbopumps and combustor/nozzles, as well as on the components, i.e., two-phase inducers, aero-spike and extendable nozzles, cryogenic CFRP composite materials, ultra-high-speed cryogenic bearing/shaft seals, and so on. (2) Research and development on improvement of rocket engine reliability: In order to improve the reliability (performance) of the LE-7A and LE-5B engines used in the H-IIA rocket, we are conducting research and development on the components, i.e., turbopumps, inducers, nozzles and so on, as well as on rocket engine simulation using supercomputer system, and also attempting to upgrade rocket engine test facilities.
