Investigation regarding reduction of soil pressure acting on calvard under high fills

This study is to clarify a mechanism of soil pressure that may act upon culvard of a weak ground, and to propose an economic and rational method to reduce such soil pressure. We examined a scale effect and effect of a side stabilization method for an actual size culvart through FEM analysis, in 1999. We also designed in trial four methods to reduce soil pressure in which usual method of construction was included, and finally picked up an economic one. As a result of analysis following items were clarified. 1) There was a scale effect. 2) Premium coordinate became more than a guide line value in a road work when an amount of relative sinking became not less than 10 centimeters. 3) An effect to reduce soil pressure by the side stabilization could be seen in the actual size culvart. Also, following item was clarified. 4) Adaptability of a pre-load method showed a high value when there still remained some room in a working period. A floating base showed a higher adaptability when the working period was limited, however, it should be much more investigated in the future because its design method and the like have not been yet fully established.
