Development of sustainable production technologies for fruit vegetables

Research overview:
(1) Development of resistant materials against noxious insects causing disease: We develop and breed a resistant family having an L4 gene against mosaic disease of pimentos (PMMV) and a family and an intermediate parent given with compound resistivity against noxious insects causing disease such as blue withering disease and pestilence in case of pimentos or blue withering disease and drooping disease with rotted roots in case of tomatoes. Resistant materials against vine rotting disease of melons are also developed. (2) Elucidation of generation ecology of damage due to disease and a disease-showing mechanism in case of fruit vegetables and development of control technique: In order to clarify a resistivity mechanism, we investigate generation ecology of damage due to disease in case of fruit vegetables such as water melons, cucumbers, pimentos and so forth. Disease damage-inhibition technique independent on chemically synthesized agricultural chemicals is developed, for example, prevention and extermination technique replacing methyl bromide against blue rotting disease of tomatoes, utilization of strongly acidic electrolytic water, fertilization and cultivation control and so forth. (3) Elucidation of physiology and ecology of noxious insects in case of fruit vegetables and development of integrated control technique: We elucidate physiological and ecological characteristics of silver leaf powder-like lice harming fruit vegetables and damage generation mechanism. Effective utilization technique of biological prevention and extermination materials such as a natural enemy, a physiologically active substance and resistant species against insects are developed in aiming at establishment of environment preservation-based control technique against noxious insects. (4) Development of environmental load-reducing and resource-saving production technique by clarifying and controlling characteristics of soil, nutrients and physiology in cultivation of fruit vegetables: Concerning tomatoes and the like, we develop daily fertilization technique for fertilizer components such as nitrogen, closed cultivation solution control technique, and soil cultivation technique with nutrient solutions utilizing organic materials such as corn steep liquor. Environment-philic materials such as bio-degradable materials, environment control technique utilizing natural energy and cultivation technique are also to be developed.
