Research overview:
In Southern Hokkaido, there exist cropping types of early spring and of late fall by the utilization of mild climate in spring and fall there, and almost through an entire year they have been shipped, by great contrast with the case in Central Hokkaido. The distinctive system of shipping these types plays an extremely important complementary role in maintaining the year-round shipping system. The mild climate in Southern Hokkaido makes it possible for the cropping-type cultivation to be of two-times a year cutting, in contrast to one-time cutting in Central Hokkaido, and to be feasible for low-cost production (regarding cost for seed-and-seedling, for fuel, and for covering materials). Up to present, almost all tests on cultivation in Southern Hokkaido are limited in non-heating cropping type, and test with heating cropping type has been insufficient. Corresponding to the demand for expansion of cropping types of ornamental plants, new cropping types are to be developed using mild climate of Southern Hokkaido. 1) Development of cultivation technique for two-times cutting of carnation with fix planting in the winter season. 2) Development of cultivation technique for two-times cutting of Eustoma russellianum with fix planting in the winter season.
