Fuel leakage property of the composite material laminate for super cold fuel tank

Research overview:
In order to attain the lightweight body indispensable to realize future space transport system, wide range of application of the composite fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) laminate is expected. In this study, aiming to make the fuel tank for liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen by CFRP, the fuel leakage property in the thickness direction of the CFRP laminate has been experimented and analyzed. It has been clarified by the experiment that in a laminate in which transverse crack is not generated, leakage is controlled by diffusion and although affected by the load, the absolute value of the leakage is small. On the other hand, in the case where crack provides leakage pass, it has been confirmed that the amount of opening displacement of the crack affects significantly on the amount of leakage and the absolute value exceeds the permissible range. From the comparison of two material systems with different toughness, it has been found that the effect of load condition is similar, although the absolute values are different, and the same modeling can be applied to the estimation of the amount of leakage.
