Research overview:
Under the target of launching M-V-5 in May of 2003, 'MUSES-C', Scientific Satellite No. 20, is under development. 'MUSES-C' is an engineering test model for the purpose of developing and verifying technologies indispensable for the future sample-return mission in the solar system. After about 2 and a half years of flight by means of electric propulsion, the model is to encounter with asteroid: 1998SF36 to take sample of it, return to the Earth in June 2007, and the capsule is to re-enter the atmosphere and to be re-cycled. In 2002, as a succession to the previous fiscal year, an integrated test was conducted on the Flight Model (FM), and validity of the design and production were confirmed.
