Research overview:
TiAl intermetallic compounds, which are under progress of application development as a lightweight heat-resistant alloy of next generation, are supposed to be exposed to high temperature gas environments as suggested from their purpose of usage. Particularly, when they are exposed to high temperature hydrogen, embrittlement of the material is feared, and therefore there is a need of examination of change of mechanical characteristics accompanying invasion of hydrogen to investigate change of microstructure due to hydrogen-induced transformation. This study thus clarifies deformation by invasion of hydrogen, deterioration of fracture characteristics, hydrides, and mutual relationships to elucidate embrittling behavior caused by hydrogen.
