Research overview:
A new transcription factor, PEBP2, is a heterodimer composed of two subunits, alpha and beta. Human genes encoding the alpha and beta proteins are identified at the breakpoints of four characteristic chromosome translocations associated with acute leukemia. Therefore, both genes are protooncogenes. We are studying the molecular mechanisms of leukemogenesis caused by altered PEBP2. There are three genes which encode the α subunit. One of them, AMLI, is essential for hematopoiesis and its malfunction causes leukemia. Another one, PEBP2αA, is essential for osteogenesis.
