Examination of Mercury exploration

Study period:1998 - 2000

Research overview:
We have only fragmental knowledge of Mercury based on the fly-by observation by Mariner 10 twenty five years ago and a small number of ground observations and each of those observations gives us a glimpse of peculiarity of the planet. Therefore although the examinations and proposals of an exploration vehicle going around Mercury have been made mainly in Europe and the U.S., the exploration has not been realized yet due to the technical problems such as an orbit launch method, measures against heat and etc. "Working group for Mercury exploration" inaugurated in 1997 closely examined those scientific problems, observation equipment and the system of an exploration vehicle, energetically designed heat and orbit and put together the results in "Examination report of Mercury exploration vehicle" with an aim of the launch in August in 2005. In the course of time for some reasons or other our group is now examining the participation in ESA's cornerstone mission Bepi Colombo.
