Research overview:
A thyroid hormone-responsive gene, ZAKI-4 hasbeen cloned from human skin fibrobiasts. ZAKI-4 is abundantry expressed in brain and heart. This gene showshigh holomogy with DSCR-1 (Down Syndrome Critical Region-1), That is a candidate gene responsible for pathogenesis of Down Syndrome. Since both congenital hypothyroidism and Down syndrome cause severe mental retardation, itis hypothesized that products encoded by these genes play crucial roles in the brain development.
