Research overview:
The purpose of the PLANET-B satellite includes the observation of the direct interaction between solar wind and Mars's ionosphere. This interaction will bring solar wind deceleration due to the ion pickup phenomenon and slow-loading effect in solar wind. Large-amount discharge of oxygen from Mars at night has been observed. To elucidate these phenomena, the observation of low-energy ions is indispensable. We developed a new three-dimensional ion measuring instrument for PLANET-B.
