Development of simple measuring system of rigidity of AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) made of plastics

AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) is an important assisting tool to the people with walking disabilities caused by sequelae of brain vessel damage and the like. Walking abilities recovers gradually by rehabilitation training but there is some difference in degree of recovery and in process depending on the personality. Although Central Hospital of Hyogo Prefectural General Rehabilitation Center has an AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis) for evaluation to support AFO description, there is no qualitative index of rigidity of AFO (physical properties concerning how flexible it is and how much of rectification power it has) and therefore we are forced to determine the type of AFO by observation of patients' walking style of trial fit in trial-and-error manner. Furthermore a personally made AFO cannot be evaluated in qualitative manner and so it is considered suitable if any trouble is not found in trial fitting. In this study we make a rigidity evaluation instrument which can be easily operated in the exercise therapy room in order to establish a rational AFO describing support system for (physicians such as prosthesis apparatus trainers and physical therapists).
