Establishment of the non-chemical prevention method (soil reduction disinfection) against diseases and insects of house vegetables

Research overview:
A methyl bromide agent, conventionally used as a soil disinfection agent, is one of the ozone-layer destruction substances and its use is going to be completely forbidden before 2005. It is, therefore, necessary to develop a substitute agent. Other possible substitute chemical agents are not only harmful to human bodies but also expensive. The disinfection method using steam and hot water requires a special expensive device and consumes a great amount of fuels. On the contrary, the reduction disinfection method is less expensive and environment-/worker-friendly because it uses the recyclable covering materials such as recyclable vinyl and organic materials including rice bran. This study attempts to clarify the range of applicable diseases and insects as well as to improve, establish and propagate the system so that environment-friendly and safe production of crops can possibly add high value on the crops made in Hokkaido.
