Research overview:
It has been known that damage/breakage of bridge piers is largely influenced not only by vibration characteristic intrinsic to the pier but also by that of the whole bridge system including ground-foundation structure system. Particularly, that of the ground-foundation structure system has many parts not elucidated yet, so detailed influence of damage/breakage of the foundation structure on that of the pier has not been made clear. From the viewpoint like this, the present study aims to conduct a vibration experiment including the ground-foundation structure system, elucidate damage/breakage mechanism of the pier systematically with consideration of compound with the foundation structure, and profit development of the optimum method for reinforcing the bridge pier. In the fiscal 1999, we examined procedure of vibration experiment of the whole bridge system (ground-foundation structure-bridge piers-supports-girders) and confirmed effectiveness of the experimental procedure.
