High-functional membranes and devices for molecular recognition

Research overview:
We focused on the design of super-biomedical materials, which means mimicking and surpassing biological functions of living systems, from the stsndpoint of biomimetic glycoengineering. Cell-recognizable sugar-carring polymers were synthesized and applied to ultra-thin films such as LB films and to polymeric micel for biomedical devices. A hepatocytes-recognizable asialoglicoprotein model was designed and a bioartificial liver-targetting drug delivery systems were developed, by use of specific recognition of hepatocytes. Compuuter simulation of molecular recognition mechanism was also successfully made. All the results are expected to be applied to chemical and material industries as well as therapeutics and diagnosis in medicine.
