Test on the improvement of lifetime productivity of F1 mother pig using 'Hamanasu W1'
2001 - 2003
In order to correspond to the increase of demand for SPF pork pig, it is an important issue to efficiently maintain and propagate 'Hamanasu W1' at Takigawa Swine Station. In the production of interstrain crossed pigs it is important to improve especially the lifetime productivity of an interstrain crossed F1 mother pig and at the same time the improvement of an ability level of a maintenance and propagation population of 'Hamanasu W1' is urgently required. In order to improve the lifetime productivity of a F1 mother pig using 'Hamanasu W1', we research the facts about mother pigs such as an update rate, the number of years of availability, a propagation record per delivery, toughness of hoofs and the degree of difficulty of feeding control and collect information on the lifetime productivity of the family producing excellent F1 mother pigs. Using the information we estimate a breeding value of a seed pig in a maintenance and propagation population by BLUP method and examine a method to efficiently utilize a seed pig by selection and crossing based on the value.
