Research overview:
Calla lilies are special flowering plants produced in Kumamoto Prefecture. The white, wet, precocious and productive 'Childsiana' became impossible to be cultivated due to spread of an epidemic causing disease damage via water, and in place of 'Childsiana', introduction of the 'Wedding march' is going on because of its relatively strong resistance against the epidemic. However, this kind of calla lily blooms late in autumn and has a small number of flowers to be cut, and the style of cut flowers is not so good that evaluation in the market is low. Accordingly, we breed a precocious and productive kind of calla lily having resistance against the epidemic. Further, in consideration of demand for pigmented kinds, we breed a long-time flowering kind of calla lily by crossing with a field kind having colorful flowers and blooming in springtime.
