Studies on factors controlling regeneration of the retinal circuitry and the optic nerve

Research overview:
It has been long believed that the retina and the optic nerve can not regenerate but in recent years they have been shown to regenerate after applications of neurotrophic factros and peripheral nerve graft. In the present research project we advanced joint studies on regeneration of retinal circuitry and optic nerve by combining molecular biological, physiological and morphological approaches in vertebrates as well as in mammals so as to develop new means to restore visual function in patients suffering from low vision or blimdness. This project consists of the following four studies: 1) Studies on molecules and genes that control differentiation and survival of retinal neurons. 2) Studies on correlations between functional expressions of retinal synapses and intracellular signalings activated by neurotransmitter or neuromodulator substances. 3) Studies on functional evaluations of regeneration and differentiation of retinal circuitry. 4) Studies on optic nerve regeneration and restoration of central visual pathway.
