Research overview:
There is the sheet-pile coffering construction method as one of countermeasures for floating damage of underground fabrics caused by liquefaction at the earthquake. The floating of underground fabrics takes place by a difference between mounting pressures on the ground immediately below the underground fabric and the ground at its periphery, causing the peripheral soil to enter round below the former, while this construction method intends to prevent the floating by hindering the liquefied soil from entering round. In the fiscal 1999, we conducted a dynamic centrifugal model experiment regarding applicability of the sheet-pile coffering construction method a measure against floating of underground fabrics and together examined its design method. It was revealed in consequence that the thicker liquefied layer was and the wider the separation between the sheet pile and fabric was, the larger floating quantity got, that earth pressure at the earthquake could be reduced in dependence on bending stiffness of the sheet pile, and that more reasonable design required consideration of fabrics, resistance of the ground above groundwater level and inertia force of the sheet pile.
