Research overview:
This study conducts research on the magnetotail in reference to the magnetic field data and satellite potential data acquired for about one year with the GEOTAIL satellite. The lobe-like structure forming the magnetotail is observed over a range about 200 times as wide as the radius of the earth, and primitive analysis has shown that the aspect of the magnetotail changes at a position beyond about distance 150 times. The plasma density observed by the satellite potential becomes dense from a distance about 150 times. These observation results signify plasma flow and motion energy flow into the magnetotail, and provide new findings on the formation of the magnetotail. This study conducts new analysis for the ionosphere-combining system in reference to the magnetotail current system, especially in the mode of paramagnetic force line current.
