Quantitative evaluation of burden placed on wheelchair users by diverse environmental barriers and study on the development of device to propel wheelchairs over the barriers

Research overview:
For wheelchair users, it is highly important to propel easily in the chair in everyday life. Since the enactment of the Barrier-free Transportation Law and the nicknamed 'Heart Building Law', barrier-free movement has been progressing greatly in houses and towns. On the other hand, there still remain issues that cannot be solved only through environmental improvement. In terms of cost, considerations should be given to possible benefits of developing wheelchair device that can realize smoother propulsion over the barriers. This study will measure the burden of environmental barriers on wheelchair users, collect data, establish a mechanism of wheelchair that can propel over environmental barriers and evaluate such mechanism's effectiveness quantitatively. In addition, this study will collect data on users' operation ability of wheelchairs, for wheelchairs that users can propel by themselves manually or being pushed by other people, and look into the possibility of a system to project acceptable environmental barriers based on users' operation ability.
