Recently, it has become evident by means of optical observation from the ground that atmosphere of the moon or Mercury contains such elements as sodium and potassium to a considerable content. Although these atmospheres have been regarded as those originated from the surface of orbs, we can not but wait for results of energy mass spectrometry of plasma in space around orbs by using artificial flying body in order to reveal their quantitative distribution or temporal variation and identify their origin. For energy mass spectrometry of ions in the neighborhood of such extraterrestrial orbs, development of such a mass spectrograph is essential that can resolve masses of ions with large mass number at a sufficient precision. LEF (Linear Electric Field)-TOF type ion mass spectrograph can realize much higher mass resolution (m/delta m: ca. 50) in comparison with TOF and/or other mass spectrographs so far employed. This study conducts development of LEF-TOF ion mass spectrograph to be mounted on 'SELENE' expected to launch in the fiscal 2006 (Heisei 18th).
