Research overview:
Expansion (re-construction) of a cross section of an existing tunnel has been requested. It has been demanded that a construction technique to reduce cost or shorten construction term should be developed in relation to the usual construction method using a road. From the point of design, it is necessary to consider the shape of the cross section of the existing tunnel, healthy condition of the tunnel, looseness of a mountain ground and the like so as to establish more rational design method. This investigation is to establish the rational re-construction method of the existing tunnel by examining the tunnel from the view points of construction and design. We were going to clarify structural characteristics of an expanded cross section of a tunnel by using analysis method as basic investigation of a rational design method in 1999. As a result, it could be clarified that a cross sectional force occurred in a support structure differed in each expansion method, and a scope of influence upon deformation of the mountain ground, covering of the existing tunnel and the like differed in the remained conditions of the existing tunnel.
