Study on faceted solidification process at microgravity environment

Research overview:
The solidification process of substances with faceted crystal plane, such as semiconductors and oxide superconductors, involves more unknown characteristics compared with that of metal. Analysis in the flow-controlled liquid-phase field is required. In this respect, the process of solidification from fused liquid is observed and analyzed under ground gravity and microgravity environments. Practically, a transparent organic substance as a model substance is used to investigate its solidification behavior, liquid flow, and temperature-density gradient relationship through an interference microscope. In this study, the nucleation process at the solidification surface is surveyed by dynamic light scattering.
