Research overview:
Alzheimer type dementia DAT is a disease which presents a phenomenon of progressive dementia from the period of middle age to old age, with appearance of a large number of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Neurofibrillary tangles, which are electron microscopically inclusion bodies mainly composed of paired helical filaments (PHF) and straight tubule (ST), have so far been believed to appear only in nerve cells. In this relation, we previously reported these PHF and ST with astroglia (AG) of DAT appearing in young age, and we further reported similar inclusion bodies appear also in DAT of normal age. On the other hand, Pick bodies which appear in Pick's disease are known to contain protein with unusual in the same way as Alzheimer neurofibrillary tangles. For that reason, we made immunohistological and electron microscopic research on inclusion bodes of astrocyte of Pick's disease with Pick bodies.
