Purpose of establishment：
National Institute of Public Hygiene (NIPH) was established by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in order to improve the nation’s public hygiene in accordance with the promulgation of National Institute of Public Hygiene Law. For these objectives, the organization was to be carried out the fostering and training of the public hygiene technician, and to investigate and study about public hygiene.
According to the establishment of National Institute of Nutrition, the Nutrition Department of NIPH was transferred to it and NIPH was reorganized on 1948.05.
National Laboratory of Medical and Hospital Management was established in National Tokyo First Hospital (current National International Medical Center) as the institution for the hospital management under the direct control institution of the Ministry of health and Welfare.
By the promulgation of the Ministry of Health and Welfare Law (Syowa 24 Law 151) NIPH was renamed Institute of National Public Health. Since then the institute has contributed to the improvement of the nation’s public health through several organizational enhancement.
Department of dental hygiene of National Institute of Preventive Hygiene (established 1947) was transferred to NIPH Shinagawa Building.
