Purpose of establishment：
On enforcement of National School Foundation Law, Shinshu University established, by merging Matsumoto University of Medicine, Matsumoto High School, Nagano Teachers School, Nagano Teachers School for Youth, Matsumoto Medical High School, Nagano Technical School of Industry, Ueda Technical School of Textile, and Nagano Prefectural Technical School of Agriculture and Forestry. The University included 6 faculties, namely, Literature and Science, Education, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture and Textile.
Graduate School of Medinine (Doctor Course) estalished.
Graduate School of Textile (Master Course) established.
Faculty of Literature and Science separated to Faculties of Humanities and Science. General Education Course established.
Graduate School of Engineering (Master Course) established.
Under the spirits of Basic Law of Education, Shinshu
University educate and study a wide range of knowledge
as well as a deeply specialized science, as the center
of arts and science, in order to develop moral, ethical
and application ability.
Shinshu University is a national university, composed
of 8 Faculties of Humanities, Education, Economics,
Science, Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture and Textile,
and an attached Junior College of Medical Technology.
Graduate Schools are established in all the faculties.
Number of full-time teaching staff is about 1000, and
that of registered students is about 11,000, 80% of
whom are from out- of-prefecture. The merits of the
University include education and research in a wide
range, coverage of inter-disciplinary areas as
environment, information or international study, and
possibility to communicate with students and teaching
staff from different fields, without being confined in
a narrow specialized area. Culliculums are made with a
focus on general and wide culture, which enables
students to behave as members of the society with proper
judgment, in addition to learning of specialized
knowledge and technique. Freshmen of all the faculties
(also sophomores of Faculty of Medicine) study mostly
general education classes (basic courses) in Matumoto
Campus, and afterward, they go to respective campuses
where faculties are located. We are rich in
international atmosphere. One can see more than 300
foreign students and more than 40 instructors. Unique
research project, such as non-lingual communication in
Faculty of Humanities, liver transplantation in Faculty
of Medicine, or forefront fiber technology in Faculty
of Textile, is actively conducted. We also encourage
inter-faculty communication and cooperative research
with the local community.
