Purpose of establishment:
We have firmly set the concept of "pen and sword",
or "knowledge and action", as the foundation of this
school's educational policy. We endeavor to impart
intellectual, moral, and physical education to all
our students. To reinforce this concept, we implement
four precepts. The first is "sincerity". This of
course means that students should go about their work
in an honest manner at all times. The second is
"industriousness". Students should make great efforts
in their studies and not mind working hard. This effort
should produce great results for them. The third
precept is "insight". In today's complex society,
students must be able to discern good from evil and
make their way into the future with a frame of mind
that is not bent on immediate profit. Students would
do well to develop this precept to the upmost. The
fourth precept is "vigor". By this we mean a certain
vitality or forcefulness which, when coupled with
self-control, overcomes one's weaknesses. We require
our students to be, first of all, masters of the
mselves, not others.
Business overview:
In 1917, late SHIBATA Tokujiro and his colleagues
founded a private school, Kokuhsikan. Two years later,
Foundation Kokushikan was established, to start a high
school, a middle school, a school of commerce (evening
class), and a technical school. In 1946, the name of
the foundation was changed to Shitoku Gakuen (IN 1951,
Status was changed to an Educational Foundation.), and
the word Shitoku was added to the names of the schools.
In 1953, the names returned to the original Kokushikan.
At the same time, Junior College was founded. In 1958,
the University with a faculty for physical education was
established. Later, Faculty of Politics and Economics,
Faculty of Engineering, Graduate School, Faculty of
Politics and Economics (Evening Class), Faculty of Law,
and Faculty of Literature were added to materialize the
University. In 1974, General Education Division was
established. In 1995, Technical School of Welfare was
established. Number of students is approximately 13,000
at present. Facilities are being expanded under a future
plan. In 1992, the building for Faculty of Physical
Education was completed in Tama, as well as Tsurukawa
Maple Hall, which is centered by the University Library
in Tsurukawa. In 1994, Junior High School building and
High School building were constructed in Setagaya,
along with exercise building for Technical School of
Welfare in Dazaifu. Furthermore, in 1998, University
Library (also called media center) and a gymnasium were
completed in Setagaya to make it the center campus of
the University.
