  • 1960/07
    Institute of Health and Research Institute for Science of Labor were integrated and Osaka Prefectural Institute of Public Health was established as an integrated research organization related to the public health. It was composed of General Affairs Division, Public Health Division, and Industrial Health Division.

    Mental Health Division was set up, resulting in the 4 division system.

    Environmental Research Division was set up, resulting in the 5 division system.
  • 1966/04
    Pharmaceutical Affairs Division was established, resulting in the 6 division system.

    Environmental Research Division was closed.
Purpose of establishment:
Osaka Prefectural Institute of Public Health has been
developed as the research institute based on regional
characteristics of Osaka since its establishment, and
has been playing active role in ""keeping health and
living safety"" of Osaka citizens as the technological
center of public health administration.
Entering the 21st century, the Institute will focus on
maintaining and promoting healthy living of citizens in
Osaka Prefecture as well as on preservation of living
Furthermore, the Institute will promote research works
that could swiftly meet with administrative needs, adding
a new power to expertise which has been developed so far,
by means of introducing high technologies such as
biotechnology and new research systems as well as
establishing strategic information systems.
Business overview:
-Public Health Division
This division provides information on the epidemic of
emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases and
countermeasures on carrier animals, the contamination
of the environment by pathogenic microorganisms and
chemicals, and maintenance of the environment. Surveys
and research on these matters are conducted.

-Food Sanitation Division
This division investigate administrative examination
for commercially available foods from the standpoint of
Data on food contamination with trace contaminants, and
microorganisms, as well as related factors are studied
under the Good Laboratory Practice(GLP).

-Industrial Health Division
With the aim of providing working environment, this
division performs tests, researches and surveys of the
workplace and household factors influencing the health
of the workers and provides consultation, advice and
education in order to protect, maintain and promote
the health and the safety of the workers.

-Pharmaceutical Affairs Guidance Division
This division provides advice and guidance for persons
engaged in commerce in Osaka Prefecture, seeking
approval for the manufacture and import of
pharmaceuticals, quasi-drugs, cosmetics and medical
equipment examinations are conducted according to the
Pharmaceutical Affairs Law, Poisonous and Deleterious
Substances Control Low, Narcotic and Psychotropic
Control Law, Stimulant Drugs Control Law, Opium Control
Law, Hemp Control Law, and Blood Collection and
Donation Service Control Law. Tests, surveys, and
research at request.

-Environmental Health Research Division
This division conducts surveys and research on the
effects of air pollution.
Bronchial asthma is increasing gradually throughout
the country, possibly due in part to air pollution.
It is thus necessary to identify airborne contaminant,
routes of contamination, and severity of the effects.
Epidemiological studies and animal experiments are
conducted to clarify factors of health injury and
their pathogenesis.
