Purpose of establishment:
The Center for Ecological Research (CER) was established in 1991 as an interuniverisity, joint-use facility aimed at, "promoting basic research and international cooperative work in the field of ecology", which is one of the traditional academic currents of Kyoto University. Increased global environmental and biodiversity problems prompted the construction of a new research building to house the CER joint-use facility on the Seta Campus in Otsu City in 1998. Later, in April 2001, the new Center for Ecological Research was launched for the purpose of researching ways to "preserve and explain the functions of biodiversity and ecosystems".
Business overview:
The CER owns a high performance research vessel on Lake Biwa, and is also developing long-term research activities in Japan and abroad. One such initiative is the establishment of a research station in a tropical rainforest on the island of Borneo in Malaysia. The CER also maintains farm fields, research plots, an arboretum on campus, and shares various facilities and equipment with other researchers from within, and outside, the university. The center's instructors are officially part of the Graduate School of Science and guide the research of the university's graduate students.
