Oita Prefectural Shallow Sea Fisheries Experimental Station was founded.
Oita Prefectural Fresh Water Fisheries Experimental Station was founded.
Oita Prefectural Fish Farming Center was founded.
Oita Institute of Marine and Fisheries Science was founded. (Three Stations and one Center reorganized and united)
This Institute was founded for the purpose of the
construction of the research structure supporting
21st century's fishery.
Research works and examinations are conducted in
They are, firstly, making research functions
completely corresponding to the needs of fishermen,
secondly, keeping research functions in good repair
for the protection of river and marine environment,
and thirdly, keeping research functions in good
working order ready for the service to the
This Institute performs an extensive range of
Research field (1)：
surveys, research, and investigations on almost all
areas related to fishery.
The main activities are as follows. The first area
can be summarized as the studies related to the
economy and management of fishery. The activities
include resource management, fishery and sea
condition forecasting, and research on the fishery
resources. The second area can be summarized as the
area concerning fishing bank development and related
technologies. Research works on the seeding
production and breeding of fish and shellfish,
research works on the marine farms, protected
surface, and on the culture fishery technologies are
among the activities belonging to this area.
The third area is concerned about studies on the
marine environments, which necessarily point to the
research on fish disease and its diagnosis, disease
control, and disease damages of fish and shellfish.
Of particular importance is studies for the control
of the red water and shellfish poison, and research
on their generation mechanisms. Summing up all the
activities, this Institute is working for flourishing
of fishery in harmony with marine environments.
