    Faculty of Agriculture was established based on five Departments : Agriculture, Forestry, Agricultural Economics, Agricultural Chemistry, and Agricultural Engineering through the consolidation of Shimane Prefectural Agricultural College (founded in April of 1951) into the national university.

    Department of Biology started as a part of the Faculty of Science, as a result of the reorganization of Faculty of Literature and Science having been established with Matsue High School under the old system of education as its nucleus with the foundation of Shimane University in May of 1949. Faculty of Science consisted of Departments of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Geology along with Department of Biology and Attached Marine Biological Station.

    The Faculty was reorganized from six departments into three departments of Agro-forest Biology,Regional Development and Natural Resource Science.
Purpose of establishment:
At the present moment entered to 21st century, we are
confronting many serious social problems like food
shortage by bursting world population, deficiency
of resources, destruction of natural environment and
social system of regional community. Based on these
backgrounds, it is the most important role of the
university which is expected by the society to
promote the education and scientific research
contributing to establish harmony between human
society and natural environment, and to create
prosperous local community and international society.
To take responsibility for these new social demands
to the university, Faculty of Life and Environmental
Science was established as "Faculty promoting scientific
research on the life, involving organisms, life,
bio-production and social life", based on the most
members of Faculty of Agriculture and members of
Department of Biology of Faculty of Science,
integrating both Faculties in the field of "Life and
Environmental Ecology". The establishment of this
Faculty is totally new consolidation of National
University in Japan with no other examples of the
same kind.In Faculty of Life and Environmental Science,
life and organisms are considered to be biological
resources in a sense that they have a wide and
variously interwoven relationship with human society,
and we promote the study and education on nurture,
exploitation, development and conservation of life
and organisms and also on the environment which
nurtures them. In the perspective of 21st century, we
are aiming to carry out the research and education in
order to promote science and technology which
contribute to eatables prosperous and comfortable
human society under coexistence with natural
Business overview:
Enrolment of the student for one academic year is 200
and the total number of students reaches 800 from
freshmen through senior, and additional 20 students
are admitted from junior class. Students are
educated through various lectures, seminars,
laboratory experiments and field experiments, and
they will graduate by submitting graduation thesis
carried out under guidance by supervisors. Each
faculty member contributes to promote science and
technology through carrying out scientific researches
in each specialized field of Life and Environmental
