1949/05
Yamagata University was established on May 31,1949 under the National School Establishment Law. The new university was based on the following older institutions of higher education : the National Yamagata Higher School, the Yamagata Teachers College, the Yamagata Youth Teachers College, the Yonezawa higher Technical School, and the Yamagata Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry College. The university started from four faculties : the Faculty of Literature and Sciences, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Engineering, and the Faculty of Agriculture.

The Non-degree Graduate Course of Engineering is opened. Junior College of Engineering is added.

The Non-degree Graduate Course of Education and the Non-degree Graduate Course of Agriculture is opened.

The Graduate School of Engineering (Master's Program) is established. (The Non-degree Graduate Course of Engineering is abolished.)

Purpose of establishment:
The Purpose of its Establishment Yamagata University
was established for the purpose of providing students
with enough knowledge centering on academic culture,
under the spirit, of the Fundamentals of Education Law.
It plays an important role on pursuing the academic and
major fields and enhancing intellectual morality and
applying ability, with the goal of contributing to the
formation of peaceful and democratic stare and
improvement of culture and industry.
Business overview:
Overview of the Project Yamagata University
consists of six faculties: Literature and
Social Sciences, Education, Science, Medicine,
Engineering, and Agriculture, Based on undergraduate
studies, Yamagata University offers five
graduate schools : Social & Cultural Systems,
Education, Medicine, Science and Engineering,
and Agriculture.
At present, Yamagata University has some
10,000 students enrolled in graduate and
undergraduate programs ; it has been one of
the leading comprehensive universities
in East Japan. The University has four campuses
in Yamagata Prefecture, i. e. Kojirakawa, lida,
Yonezawa, and Tsuruoka. The Faculty of Literature
and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education,
the Faculty of Science, Computing Service Center,
and the International Student Center are located in
the Kojirakawa Campus, and the Faculty of Medicine,
University Hospital and Research Laboratory
for Molecular Genetics are located in the lida Campus.
The Faculty of Engineering and Cooperative Reserch
Center are located in Yonezawa City, which is south
part of Yamagata Prefecture.
The Faculty of Agriculture in the Tsuruoka Campus is
located in Tsuruoka City near the Japan Sea Coast.
Each facluty has undergone Extension Course,
various forums, and educational research activities
through research in collaboration with industry,
university, and local government.
In 1999, Venture Business Laboratory was
established in Yonezawa Campus, which was
the second establishment in Tohoku District.
With the creation of research development
of Venture Business at Graduate Schools
it is expected that Venture Business cultivates
creative personnel who have the high level of
professional ability.
