Yokohama City Sanitary Inspection Station was set up. Following the change in Local Autonomy Law in 1956, the city took over the food sanitation inspection work from the prefecture. The Station started the inspection operation, using a part of the facilities of Kanagawa Prefecture Hygiene Institute.
Yokohama Municipal Hygiene Institute was founded. The building of former Minami Public Health Center at 102 Banchi, Nakamura Machi 2 Chome, Minami Ku was remodeled, and the Institute was moved there. The Station was given the new name, with General Affairs Office, Virus Department and Chemistry Department.
The Institute was relocated at the present address. The council for new construction and operation of the Institute was set up in February 1964. The council concluded to construct a new building for the Institute which should have an advanced technology standard, proper facilities and personnel. This decision was made mainly because the City needed a research institute with advanced equipment and technology to deal with the research and study of public health such as pollution problems, virus diseases and food hygiene. Those health-related problems were caused by drastic economic growth. Also, the building was getting older and smaller. The new building was therefore built in the present site in April 1968.
Pollution Center, Antipollution Measure Agency was set up. Pollution Center was set up in the Institute with the establishment of Antipollution Measure Agency. The newly established Environmental Health Department handled the work of the Center.
Yokohama Municipal Pollution Research Institute was set up. Pollution Center was abolished after Yokohama Municipal Pollution Research Institute (the present Yokohama Environmental Science Research Institute) took over the pollution-related work.
The Institute was set up to conduct experimental research
and study on bacteria, virus, blood serum, food,
environment, water quality and hygiene biologically,
physically, and chemically. Through those experimental
research and study, it is expected that public health
administration in Yokohama City works smoothly.
The Yokohama City Institute of Health has been playing the
role of the scientific and technical center in the field of
regional health in Yokohama City. The institute conducts
bacteriological inspections and investigations on pathogenic
bacteria such as O-157, food poisoning fungus, viruses such
as influenza and AIDS, and infectious diseases. Medicozoological
investigations are conducted including ticks and cockroaches.
Blood serums are developed for diseases such as syphilis.
Chemical investigations are conducted on food including food
additives such as coloring matters, food constituents,
nutrients, and small-amount contaminants including pesticide
residue. Home environments are investigated concerning
formaldehyde in the air and household utensils such as
textile products for young children and household detergents.
Environmental health is studied concerning allergies.
Mutagens such as chlorine in the pool water are investigated,
and water quality inspections are conducted for underground water,
waste-water, pool water and swimming place water. In addition,
the institute collects and analyzes information related to public
health, and provides it. Technical training programs are prepared
for those engaged in the regional health in sanitary survey.
