Research area  (2): Radiation/chemical substance influence science ,  Human pathology
Thorotrast is a cooloidal solution of radioactive ThO2
and was used as a radiological contrast medium during
the World War II. Injected Thorotrast accumulated in
so-called reticuloendothelial system, especially in the
liver and in the Those organs were exposed chronically to
α-particles and liver cancers were induced decades after
administration of Thor Thorotrast-induced cancers are
composed of hepatocellular carcinoma, intrahepatic
cholangiocarcinoma and angiosarcome same frequency.
We accumulated paraffin embedded blocks along with autopsy
records, deposited amounts of Thorotrast, total does of
α-particles from over 170 cases of patients with
Thorotrast administration.
Research field : human pathology. rediation biology
User environment and conditions:
autopsy records and data about Thorotrast deposits and cumulative doses are available on request. Paraffin embedded blocks are not available in their crude status but sections may be available.
User procedures and method:
Proposal of the project using those materials here is
needed to be turned in and the evaluation by the ethical
commitee will be necessary in some cases.
