Observational data are essential for scientists to
understand the mechanism of energy and gas exchange
between vegetation and the atmosphere, to monitor and to
model impacts of climate change on the terrestrial
ecosystem. The utilization of the observational data,
however, has generally been restricted to participants
of observation campaigns owing to least advertisement
and poor accessibility to the data. In order to provide
the valuable observational data for the scientists and
also for the public through Internet, National Institute
for Agro-Environmental Sciences (NIAES) and Japan
Science and Technology Corporation (JST) jointly
developed Ecosystem Database as one of the Database
Development Program of JST. The database contains the
data observed in various ecosystems in the world, and
provides not only the fundamental micrometeorological
variables such as temperature, humidity, wind speed,
solar radiation but also the key parameters to elucidate
global warming such as evapotranspiration, carbon
dioxide assimilation and methane emission.
