【要約】【目的】 高い電気容量を有しかつ安全性に優れたリチウムイオン二次電池用負極に適した炭素質粒子、及び過電圧が小さいリチウムイオン二次電池用負極を提供する。【構成】 メソフェーズピッチのグリーンコークス粉砕物の表面に含酸素有機物を被着させ、熱処理し平均粒子径が60μm以下、炭素層間距離(d002)が0.370〜0.350nm、C軸方向の結晶子の厚さ(Lc)が0.8〜10nm、真比重が1.7〜2.1の範囲にあるリチウムイオン二次電池用負極に適した炭素質粒子とする。また、該炭素質粒子をリチウムイオン二次電池用負極の活物質として用いる。
