The University of the Ryukyus was founded on May 22, 1950 by the United States Civil Administration of the Ryukyus on the site of the ancient castle in Shuri as the first college-level institution ever established in Okinawa. The founding aims of the university were to provide promising young people in Okinawa with the opportunity of cultivating themselves ethically and culturally, and of acquiring highly specialized knowledge and skills which they could utilizefor the betterment of their society, and thereby contribute to the welfare of the world around them. Since its establishment, the university has undergone important changes. When Okinawa reverted to Japan in 1972, it became a national university. In order to cope with the growing needs of its facilities, the university planned and completed its wholesale removal from Shuri to the present campuses in August 1985. The new 1. 3 million-square meter campuses, located in a hilly area of central Okinawa, commands splendid views of the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea. The university has grown into a comprehensive institution with six colleges: Lawand Letters, Education, Science, Medicine, Engineering, and Agriculture. The graduate schools offer advanced degree programs in Humanities and the Social Sciences, Education the Natural Sciences, Medicine, the Health Sciences, Engineering, and Agriculture. In addition, there are many other facilities, such as the University Library, University Hospital, Tropical Biosphere Research Center, Elementary School and Junior High School. Since October 1993, the university has been going through the process of integrating its Junior College, a three-year evening college, into the four-year university system. Moreover, it has recently restructured the departments of the College of Law and Letters and College of Engineering. To accomplish these aims, night courses have been offered by both the Colleges of Law and Letters, and Engineering in order to provide educational opportunities for working adults. To the present time, the university has signed academic exchange agreements withfourteen universities abroad, including Michigan State University, Olivet University (USA), the University of Canberra (Australia), and Chulalongkorn University(Thailand) among others. More than 200 international students from twenty-eightcountries such as China, Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Korea, Bangladesh,Malaysia, Thailand, Brazil, the U. S. A., Ghana, and India, are currently studying on the campuses. Taking advantage of its geographical location and historical and cultural backgrounds, the university aspires to achieve status as international institution, serving Southeast Asia and the Pan-Pacific regions as well asits own local community.
