Business overview:
The National Institute of Health Sciences(NIHS) has
two major missions in servicing Japanese Citizens.
The first one is scientific research, testing and
investigation to assess the quality, safety and
efficacy of pharmaceutical products (including
medical devices), foods and chemicals in the living
environment. The results of these activites are
reflected in the Ministry Policies to ensure and/or
improve Japanese Citizen's health and environment.
The other is preliminary review for premarketing
approval of pharmaceuticals and medical devices, the
responsibility of the "Phermaceuticals and Medical
Devices Evaluation Center", newly attached to the
NIHS in 1997. Strict and prudent but rapid
examination by the Center are envisaged for newly
applied phermaceuticals and medical devices, and for
re-examination and re-evaluation of approved
examples.
